Skardu, capital
of Baltistan is at 2438 meters above sea level in the backdrop of the
great peaks of the Karakoram mountain range.
Baltistan is known as the "Tibet -e- Khurd"
or little Tibet since its life style
reflects that of the roof of
the world and land of Lamas.
It borders on the
Chinese province of Sinkiang and Indian occupied Kashmir. Baltistan is
composed by five
main valleys Shigar, Skardu, Khaplu, Rondu and Kharmang .Shigar Valley is
one of the most famous from the mineralogical point of view and is the gateway
to the great mountain peaks of the Karakorams, Gasherbrum peak &
K-2.
Also here the minerals are characteristically from pegmatites, with the same paragenesis of Gilgit: Aquamarines, fantastic and very aesthetic topaz
The tourmalines from Skardu are among the best you can find in Pakistan.........
